What are cookies?

Cookies are little text strings that websites can store on the user device to be sent back on every visit. During the navigation the user could also receive cookies from other websites/servers than the visited one (“third party” cookies”) because some content included in the visited website could be hosted on the mentioned servers. Cookies, which can be persistent (not deleted after closing the browser), are used for different purposes: authentication, social interaction, statistics, etc.

We can divide cookies into two macro-categories: technical cookies and profiling cookies.

Technical cookies are necessary for the website to work properly and can be divided in:

  • session (navigation) cookies: ensure the website is correctly working (permitting, for example, to store products in the cart or enable the user to access login-only areas);
  • “analytics” cookies: used by the website owner to collect informations about the users and about their navigation. They’re used for making statistics;
  • functionality cookies: permit the user to navigate according to selected criteria (website language, font size, etc.)

Profiling cookies are to create profiles of the user and are used to place adverts consistent with the navigation preferences of the user.
